More than 15 countries and thousands of people have participated in the GROW week with events celebrating food in all its aspects, both in terms of pleasure and power. It along those lines that was held the third edition of the Koudou of Faso in Ouaga, Burkina Faso from 18 to 20 October 2013. Over 2000 visitors tasted and savored local dishes cooked by women and men and bought local produce offered in the market set up for the occasion through a vote to a culinary contest for their favorite dish.

This year I participated for the first time in the GROW week in Burkina Faso. Before arriving at Oxfam, I had heard a lot of the GROW week and its major event: “The koudou of Faso”. So here I am, in the heart of the organization of the Koudou for three months. In Burkina Faso, it is a coalition of civil society organizations and national and international NGOs that implement this campaign, including: Confederation Paysanne du Faso (CPF), NGOs Permanent Secretariat (SPONG) and Oxfam. This year, one of the GROW week innovations is the arrival of a famous Peruvian chef Flavio Solorzano. He is a great supporter of the GROW campaign in Peru and is a the sponsor of a food fair based on local products. This visit is the achievement of south-south intelligent exchanges. On 18 October, the GROW market opened its doors. 30 producers/processors from across Burkina exposed local food products and sold to more than 500 visitors. At the same time, a forum was held on the fair right to food. More than 70% of the agricultural budget depends on foreign aid. “Do not entrust our stomach to external countries” concluded the producers’ representatives at the forum.

The highlight of the week

On Saturday, October 19, 32 men and women chefs from 5 regions of Burkina Faso cooked for more than 2000 people. Early in the morning, volunteers, staff members of the campaign organization and participants to the culinary contest stormed the SIAO Yellow Pavilion.

Throughout the day, a crowd of visitors gathered to taste the dishes and vote to elect the winners. They also visited the booths of local products and make their purchases.

Finally, 5100 votes were recorded for the 2013 Koudou. To finish, the closing ceremony was chaired by Burkina Faso Koudou’s godmother, in the presence of many guests The evening was marked by the performance of various artists including Bob Sana, Smarty, Rovanne, Issa Bamogo de Nobéré, Chocho, Viviane Yanogo, Pagnagdé and Campus Ambiance.

The CPF gave to the godmother an open letter from rural areas to the ministers in charge of agriculture. Mrs. Sangare/Compaore Nestorine promised to transmit the document and assured that the government will continue to prioritize agricultural development in Burkina Faso.
