VIETNAM: Child-Centred Methodology promotes equality among ethnic minorities school children

From Dak R’lap District of Dak Nong Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, Vice-Headmistress Nguyen Thi Ben of Le Hong Phong Primary School shared her thoughts after one year Oxfam GB started its Education project in the province.

Oxfam came to Dak Nong as a cool breeze. Amongst its suitcases full of experience in livelihoods, disaster responses, gender equality etc., Oxfam GB chose education to support the province.

Without big noises, Oxfam just gently involved in the issues that teachers most concerned and cared about: Child Centered Methodology. (Our teachers often say that Oxfam always provide just what the doctor ordered).

Just nearly a year with four specialised workshops, 108 resource teachers – Dak Nong participants have been recharged with fresh energy. At the workshops, the teachers learnt and shared experiences passionately. Back to their districts, to their schools they quickly scale up Child Centred Methodology model (CCM) for their colleagues.

Excitingly, since CCM is also part of a system of active teaching methodologies that Ministry and Departments of Education and Training have promoted, teachers are very interested in the method. When the teachers were coping with the issue of how to teach ethnic students in their localities most effectively, Oxfam turned the green light to pave a way for them.

The new breeze reaches many provincial primary schools, making them more delightful and bustling. The teaching method has brought visible changes especially for classes with the majority of students from different ethnic groups; students become more proactive and increase confident in communication. Things never or hardly happened before are now being seen more often. For example, a M’nong ethnic student debated her point in front of the group backing up by her own graph!

CCM is very particular but also flexible. It requires teachers to be able to analyse and select their own approaches, methods, and classroom management for each lesson. That is why CCM is so fascinating.

The picture of Dak Nong’s teaching methodology is becoming more interesting and convincing; the quality of education and equal opportunity are being improved amongst ethnic groups. A sample of how small steps can bring about a bigger change in a society.
