Wow...Duncan thanks for organizing this. Sometimes i feel that given the quantum and kinds of violence on the rise against women and very young girls alike, a passive acceptance of 'bending' norms is just not acceptable. we need some disruptions that bring about a better sense of equilibrium.

Am from India and perhaps the current situation where daily we see reports of sexual assaults on girls and women is on the rise, is influencing my thoughts.

Great post on a fascinating topic. I thought your readers would be interested to know about a new online survey that The Asia Foundation is conducting that offers some surprising findings on Vietnamese youth perceptions of gender roles, mainly that despite rapid modernization in Vietnam, gender bias remains deeply embedded. http://asiafoundation.org/in-asia/2013/03/06/despite-rapid-modernization-in-vietnam-survey-reveals-gender-bias-persists-among-youth/

Duncan, Wow. This post is a precious gift. It was a very challenging project on tight deadlines to inform the WDR 2012 on Gender Equality and Development. Deeply grateful, Patti (and also Ana Maria and Carrie)

Thanks Duncan,I also found the research report fascinating, though perhaps there's scope for more analysis of why gender norms differ in urban and rural contexts.

Relatedly the Lusaka-based private radio station, Radio Pheonix, posed the question: 'what does the phrase "be a man" mean?'. Respondents have mainly referred to strength and responsibility, though a couple have questioned these essentialist, binary gender stereotypes, suggesting that they can also be possessed by women.
