I think it's going to be much harder to get funding for urban work , both from individual doners and tax-payers. For reasons that would be worth examining but are not immediately obvious to me , people will view it much more the responsibilty of national governments to provide urban services than rural ones. The NGO response to fund advocacy and campaigning work won't be an easy proposition to sell to Western donors. It would be very interesting to see the sort of projects and the type of work that Indian donors prefer to fund.

A greater level of co-ordination between many ministries and a healthy nexus of relevant programmes/schemes such as the The Poverty Alleviation, Employment & Education, Rural Water Schemes, Village Road Development Schemes would definitely narrow down the gap between urban and rural and rural development as an issue in general.

Education (building of schools) and housing/development shall go hand in hand to achieve a successful, long term poverty alleviation mission.

Yes… the rural-urban divide is, and should be, a major concern. I have witnessed worse health conditions in certain slum communities in Kolkata compared to some villages in neighbouring districts. Unfortunately, the local government system is also skewed in favour of rural India. The Panchayati Raj institutions go right down to the level of 1000 adult voter population units. Urban India has to contend with wards where population may even run into a lakh! There are fewer mandated platforms for engagement. I guess more of us need to jump on the urban bandwagon (and do a lot more!) to drive action and balance the equation!
