Ethiopia: Niema goes to school for the first time

The second Millennium Development Goal aims to achieve universal primary education for boys and girls. Like many girls in rural Ethiopia, 14 year old Niema has never had chance to go to school: “Before, all the girls in the village used to stay at home because their mothers thought education wasn’t good for them,” she says. Oxfam has been working with local teachers and community leaders to change attitudes and encourage girls’ participation in school. Niema’s mother eventually let her start – she’s now the eldest in her class by some way, but she couldn’t be happier:
