Shakti — A Feminist Perspective Building and Performance Workshop

Oxfam’s Women Leadership Programme in Bangladesh supported Feminist Perspective Building & Performance Workshop-”Shakti” from April 13 to 22, 2012.

The workshop, organised by Shadhona – A Center For Advancement of South Asian Culture,  is a breakthrough innovative methodology using mainstream perfoming art to create a gender-just society. Twenty-seven participants registered for the workshop, of which 12 were men.

Over the 10-day workshop, Kamla Bhasin, a leading feminist activist of South Asia, helped participants in underestanding feminism and gendered-reality of the society. Ananya Chatterjea, Director of Dance & Professor in the Department of Theater Arts & Dance in the University of Minnesota, USA, helped participant’s articulating their personal and collective experience of life, conflicts, joy and agonies and portray them into dance form on the stage .

After successfully completing the workshop, participants presented a dance program at the Chhayanuat Cultural Centre. Both the content and methodology was much appreciated by the media and development activists.

The workshop was supported by OXFAM, the American Center of the US Embassy in Dhaka and SANGAT.
