Asia Coordinator: Impact Investment and Sustainability Advisory
Based in Regional Centre, Bangkok, Thailand
National Post, Salary Range: THB 83,000 – 115,900 gross per month
Benefits: bonus, provident fund, medical, life and travel insurance cover, 20+ annual leave days
Background
The last two decades have seen major transformations across Asia. Strong economic growth has increased competitiveness and created wealth across the region. But it’s been wildly uneven. The region has also become more socially unstable, less ecologically diverse, more unequal and more environmentally vulnerable. This is being partly driven by the huge reliance on small, medium and micro enterprises (SMEs) working in the spectrum of formal to informal economy, employing 90-98 per cent of the total workforce. While much touted as engine of growth, the SMEs have very constrained accesses to knowledge and capital. Coupled with relentless pressure from buyers and constant resource squeeze SMEs can face a race to the bottom which has often negative social and environmental impact of their actions. With your knowledge and expertise, we can reach out to these SMEs and help them to become more sustainable and diverse and make wealth creation in the region more equal.
About the role
We’ve created a Regional Economic Empowerment team in response to the challenges and opportunities in Asia. As a key member of the team, you’ll develop and manage an Impact Investment fund and sustainability advisory services to help Asia SMEs (initially focused on Agriculture) do more and do better. You will be the key liaison between the investors in the fund and Oxfam, sharing with the fund our on-the-ground understanding, and helping key stakeholders on both sides understand each other’s areas of expertise. You will be our in-house investment management and business sustainability expert, coordinating and delivering plans and strategies, and monitoring our participation in the investment fund and collaborative advisory services to ensure outcomes meet our social and environmental criteria – especially our commitment to gender equality and women’s rights.
What we’re looking for
This is a very unique position, one that will have a massive impact on our work with SMEs throughoutAsia. To make a success of it, you’ll need experience of impact/triple bottom-line investing, investment funds, and SME finance. You’ll also need experience of business consulting, with the technical knowledge of the sustainability tools and standards (such as ISO 26000 and GRI) needed to make a real impact on the lives of SME workers and their communities. With your investment background, you’ll also have good project management and reporting skills, and analysing complex financial proposals and challenging them as needed will be second nature. Of course, at the heart of this role will be building strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, so your presentation, negotiation, influencing and communication skills will need to be second to none. If those skills have seen you already build a network of relevant investment and development contacts that you can bring to the table, it would be a valuable bonus – as would any experience inAsia’s developing economies.
This is a national hired post, we will be unable to obtain visa and work permit for a non-Thai national.
